The Basics of Interior Design

To transform any space into a fabulous one could be very easy; all you need to do is to know a few basics on interior design and a little experimentation. These are the same interior design basics that interior designers apply to their clients’ houses. These interior design basics include balance, rhythm, harmony, emphasis, scale and proportion.

Balance is the most basic among the interior design principles; it can be symmetrical, asymmetrical or radial balance. Symmetrical balance can be achieved by putting exactly the same furniture, style and color on both sides of the room. Asymmetrical balance is a more interesting one compared to symmetrical balance; it can be achieved by balancing colors and weights without duplicating them. Radial balance is usually applied in the dining are with round tables with a focal point on the center, usually a vase, and the other things radiate around it.

Rhythm, on the other hand, can be achieved through repetition of either color or shape in different intervals. The basic idea of rhythm is to help you carry your eye all around the room. Harmony is closely related to rhythm as it uses the same color, shape and texture to achieve a sense of restfulness and steady flow.

The main idea of emphasis is to create a focal point in a room and arrange different furniture around them. The focal point for emphasis can be furniture, a beautiful fireplace, or any piece that can really stand out in a room. And lastly, scale and proportion is very basic but also very important in interior design. Its main idea is to scale the furniture that you will be putting in your room to its size.
